Playful Public Seating

Something I’ve wanted to create for a while, this project brings together my mural practice and playful approach to 3D design. The result is a vibrant collection of sculptural concrete seating that combines public art with functionality.

Designing the benches was a joyful process. I created collages and experimented with bright colours to develop their distinctive forms and bold surface designs. Together, they create a cohesive series that brings a sense of play to public spaces.

The pieces were created for the Joy building in Birkenhead, with each design responding to the space’s branding and visual identity. Made from durable, lightweight glass-fibre reinforced concrete and painted by hand, they form a collection I would love to develop further.

The first bench was hand-painted in my garden on a glorious sunny day. It was hard to part with, as it completely transformed the space. Although the benches were designed for an urban setting, it was a delight to see how naturally they sat among the garden’s greenery.

The finished benches balance bold, solid forms with vibrant colour and playful pattern. They have a subtle Brutalist influence while feeling contemporary, joyful and inviting.
